Author tells how to make money at homeHASTINGS housewife Diana Henderson got so sick of people looking down their noses at her occupation, she wrote a book about it and launched it at the Hawke's Bay Show. Earn $50,000 a year as a House Spouse, aims to raise the status of housewives or house husbands by showing people how they can save or make just as much money by staying home instead of going to work. Mrs Henderson says she sees many couples in relationships where both partners work in the belief they will be better off. "Often they are not. You often see both partners working and they are going backwards. They don't see the value of living at home." She says one example of how a housewife can save money is in supermarket shopping. "People who go to work don't have the time to shop around and look for things they can cook cheaply," she said. Instead, working couples tend to buy expensive convenience foods. Mrs Henderson says children also pick up the habits of working parents. "Skills are being lost. Skills like looking after a household and even just basic cooking skills. I hope this book changes people's attitudes because I got sick of being looked down on." - Dominion Post, 28 October 2002 |
